FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Northern lights are visible from middle of August until middle of April.
NORTHERN LIGHTS
Aurora are not predictable at more than 1 to 3 hours in advance, (you can’t know months, weeks or even days ahead). When we start the hunt, there is no way to tell you how the night will end (we can only talk about the current situation and what we expect in the next 3 hours), the situation will evolve in real time and decisions will be taken accordingly during the hunt.
WEATHER
The weather evolves all the time in the arctic circle and often doesn’t align with what the forecasts show. The arctic weather is one parameter that we learned to deal with during our many years of experience as professional northern light hunter. We check that on the night of the hunt, we can’t predict days ahead if the weather will allow us to hunt or not, in few minutes anything can change.
There’s no “best time” to see the Northern Lights. They are visible from mid-August until mid-April. During this period, every month offers a mix of different nights and varying aurora intensities.
During 1 week you can have nights with good northern lights, nights with amazing, nights with too much clouds (leading to cancellation of the hunt)…
Please note that Northern Lights are forecasted only 1 to 3 hours in advance, not days or weeks ahead.
If you send us a message saying “I read the FAQ, BUT, according to your experience, do you think…” we kindly remind you that we wrote the FAQ based on our experience of northern light hunt since 2018, and our experience makes us telling you that there is no better time. Northern lights forecast -> 1 to 3 hours in advance only.
START: Anytime between 3:00 p.m and midnight. The starting time depends on the estimated distance to drive, the solar activity, magnetic field, etc… We will update you during the day of your reservation once a decision can be taken regarding the starting time. Usually the final decision on the starting time is shared 30 min to 1 hour ahead. We kindly request you to check regularly your phone from the beginning of the afternoon on the day of your reservation.
END: it’s unpredictable and vary every night depending on several factors such as at what time we have northern lights and time to enjoy, take photos, distance to drive on the way back…
Pick Up: We don’t do pick up because we are providing real hunts and want you to get the best northern lights possible on your reserved night. Our starting time is actually adapted to the weather and northern light conditions. Because we depend on nature, we sometimes only can give the starting time less than 1 hour in advance. Once we can tell when we start, we all have to meet at the same given place in city centre of Rovaniemi (place received by email after booking) and we go right away. Several pick ups for a group of up to 8 people can sometimes add an extra 1.5 hour (on top of the hours we have to drive for the hunt) and potentially be the extra time that makes you miss the best northern lights in some nights when timing matters a lot with nature.
Drop off: Yes we do drop off after the hunt, because then there is no rush once we already got the hunt done. Limited to 10km radius of Rovaniemi centre.
Our service of northern light hunter and photographer. Unlimited effort until we get to the northern lights. And professional photos of you with northern lights.
Food is not included, and we recommend you to bring snacks or eat before the hunt. We will be focusing on driving and taking photos as it is a real hunt with purpose of really getting northern lights and photos (not a bbq tour).
The colours and intensity of the Northern Lights vary from one night to an other.
In smaller cases northern light can appear grey to the naked eye but green on camera, it can be just one small and faint line without noticeable movement.
In best cases northern lights can appear very bright and colourful with naked eye, filling the whole sky and moving fast.
You have to be prepared for any intensity possible on your reserved night, it could be small or big or anything in between. Northern lights are not big every night.
More intense northern lights are and smaller is the difference of color and brightness between what you see with your eyes and what the camera can capture. With small northern lights you will be surprised how they appear on camera while they would be less visible with eyes. With big northern lights you will see them really well with your eyes and they can be very impressive.
Being in the arctic circle first of all.
We start all our hunts from Rovaniemi, Finland. But why Finland ? Because the country is super flat, giving us straight roads to drive efficiently to far distance if needed (unlike Norway or Iceland per example on which long distance take way more time because of the sea or mountains and could make you miss northern lights…).
Every night is a different place to be able to find northern lights. Sometimes we stay in Finland, and sometimes we drive through Sweden too…
Sometimes short distance driving is enough and sometimes several hours driving are required. There is not any specific “better place”, that’s why it’s called northern light “hunt” and not northern light “itinerary” (decisions about locations are taken accordingly during the hunt).
